Top 100 Comics: August 2010
The resurrected heroes of the DC Universe continue to find their place in the post-Blackest Night universe in Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi's Brightest Day #7, the latest issue of DC Comics' biweekly event, giving the New York-based publisher the top spot on the comics sales chart in August 2010.
In total, DC Comics had four of the ten ten books in July. In addition to Brightest Day #7 at #1, Brightest Day #8 ranked #2, Grant Morrison and Tony Daniels' Batman #702, a tie-in to Batman: R.I.P., Final Crisis, and Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, ranked #7; and Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #1, a new series starring Green Lantern Guy Gardner from Peter Tomasi and Fernando Pasarin, ranked #10.
Crosstown rivals Marvel Comics took the other six spots in the top ten comics for August. Leading the way at #3 was Avengers #4 from Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita, Jr., continuing Marvel's "Heroic Age" ega. Two more Avengers books placed in the top ten as well — Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen's New Avengers #3 at #4 and Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato, Jr.'s Secret Avengers #4 at #5. Amazing Spider-Man #640, the third part of Joe Quesada and Paolo Manuel Rivera's "One Moment In Time," placed at #6 on the charts. X-Men #2, the second part in the "Curse of the Mutants" storyline that pits the X-Men against the Marvel Universe's vampire hordes, ranked #8, and Uncanny X-Men #527 rounded out the top ten at #9.
Among other Premier publishers, Dark Horse Comics' top book in August was Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Riley one-shot, part of the "Buffy Season 8" storyline. IDW Publishing's True Blood #2, based on HBO's wildly popular vampire television series, ranked #74. Finally, Image Comics' top book in August was Image United #3, the universe-wide crossover event written and drawn by the Image Comics partners, ranked at #65.

For retailers, Diamond offers the Top 300 Comics and Top 300 Graphic Novels sales charts on the Diamond Tools page of the Diamond Retailer Services website to provide more information about the industry's top selling publications.
How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
