Happiness Is a Monthly Comic Book Series from KABOOM!, Charlie Brown!
For over sixty years, readers young and old have turned to the comics pages of their newspaper or tuned into the beloved animated specials to experience the trials and tribulations, the adventures and the anxieties of Charlie Brown, his beagle Snoopy, and all of his friends in Charles Schulz's Peanuts. In April, BOOM! Studios launched their Kids imprint KABOOM! with Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, the first new Peanuts since Schulz's death in 2000. Following this month's release of Peanuts #0 (SEP110913F, $1.00), KABOOM! launches a monthly Peanuts comic book in January with Peanuts #1 (NOV110837F, $3.99)!
Each month, Peanuts will feature a variety of stories, from classic Sunday Peanuts comic strip reprints to comic book-styled reworkings of Peanuts daily strips and adaptations of stories from the early 1960's Peanuts comic books to all-new stories with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, and all the rest. In addition to the reprinted strips from Charles Schulz, the first issue of Peanuts features all new original work from Vicki Scott and Paige Braddock, both of whom worked on Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, plus Shane Houghton and Matt Whitlock. In adapting Schulz's comic strip work and characters to the comic book page, the creators of KABOOM!'s Peanuts effortlessly evoke the artistic styles and sensibilities of the many eras of Peanuts, from the slightly rougher look of the 1950's and early 1960's to the pop culture icons of the late 1960's and early 1970's and the final evolution of the characters in the 1980's and 1990's, resulting in something much like a Vince Guaraldi jazz improvisation on a familiar tune, highlighting the familiar aspects but also bringing new elements to the fore.
Each issue of Peanuts will feature a Charles Schulz cover, drawing in many cases upon little-seen artwork from Dell's Peanuts comic book of the early 1960s. For every 10 copies of Peanuts #1 (NOV110837F, $3.99) retailers order, they will receive one free copy. In addition, retailers can also qualify for incentive covers that will be highly treasured by Peanuts collectors as each issue of Peanuts will have a variant cover that spotlights one of Schulz's beloved characters as they looked in their earliest appearances. The first issue, naturally, will have a "First Appearance" Charlie Brown cover (SEP118163F, $3.99) with an all-yellow background. Subsequent variant covers will feature other fan-favorite Peanuts characters, including Lucy Van Pelt and Snoopy.

Earlier this year, the official Peanuts YouTube channel uploaded a video of an interview with the artists of KABOOM!'s Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown graphic novel as they discussed their love of Peanuts and their approach to making the graphic novel worthy of the Peanuts legacy. Peanuts fans curious about KABOOM!'s commitment to Schulz's characters or the creative process in general will be impressed at the care KABOOM! is taking in bringing Charlie Brown and his gang to comics.
